Weastern Canaries
We do not stay longer because we need to head for Gran Canaria, were we will work on the boat a little before meeting with Helene's sister and her boyfriend in Tenerife. We leave too early and this will make us land at night at Las Palmas. On the way many dolphions come play with Cephee for over half an hour, this was really unbeliveable... The closer we get the more lights we see, Las Palmas is a real Christmas tree! We decide that we will anchor at night since the harbor is well signaled. Everything runs well, even if is was a bit tight sometimes with two big cargos... It was difficult to spot the harbor lights since there are so many lights from the city around... Finally we through the anchor at 2 am and head for a good sleep.
We spend 3 days in this unattractive city. There are too many cars, buildings for us. The harbor is dirty and noisy but the stop is necessary to equip Cephee. We meet again with Mamuroba. In the beginning we have difficulty finding what we need at correct prices, but finally each problem is solved: the anteana tuner for the SSB will come from Germany with Lucie in Cabo Verde, the watermaker (gift from Helene's parents) will be delivered at the airport in Tenerife, and we find a small fridge which is cheap and has just the right size. On top of this we buy a spare gun for fish hunting. We take the time to visit the old city and we are impressed: small streets, nice houses, flowers... We find a small restaurent were the waiter takes great care of us. He is very proud of his island and doesn't often see tourists in this part of town, so he describes every meal and drink with passion. We tast the gofio (corn flour with water and spices), it's great! We leave Gran Canaria on the 20th of Octobre to pick up Cécile and Alexandre at Tenerife airport on the next day. This time the wind is low and we have to motor in order to arrive before the night... The wind is something we still have trouble predicting! We anchor at Poris de Abona, on the west coast of the island.
Tenerife is very urbanised. Cars are everywhere, and the surroundings of Santa Cruz remind us of our industrial zones in Europe. Cécile and Alexandre arrive at 10pm with huge bags... They bring us many goodies: duck liver, saucissons, cheese, mustard, wine, couscous, and letters from the familly and friends. We are really happy! The next day we head directly for La Gomera, where we hope to find some wild spots, with less tourism. With the spinaker, wego really fast down Tenerife, but after the the cape, no wind... Alexandre swims along the boat. We arrive just before sunset, where we anchor at the playa de Las Guanchas. Candel diner with fishes and Mojo sauce with Canarian patatos. The next day is spent swimming along the rock coast. Thomas hunts with his new gun and gets 4 fishes: one each for the diner! Underwater it is very nice and we can take pictures thanks to the waterproof case for the camera given by the MIGSOs (Thomas' team in Hamburg). In the eavening we head for San Sebastian Harbor. It is small and very nice, right by huge mountains. Cécile and Alexandre invite us for diner in the parador hotel! In this very nice colonial style hotel, we go through the menu with difficulty since everything seams so good! It was a great diner, and well appreciated since we will not eat in this kind of places often in the next two years... From San Sebastian we visit La Gomera for 3 days. Cécile and Alexandre rent a car, and we can visit the inside of the island. The roads are very nice, sometimes in the mouintains, sometimes along the sea. Finally we discover a little green land. In the center of the island, there is a national park: The Garajonay park. There are many trees. There is even a small river! This reminds us sometimes of French forests... The paths are nice and with few people. The third day we eat 2 kg of sardinas for the pik-nik: on the BBQ, it was delicious. On the way back, the raod is very nice. Far away we can see the islands of El Hierro and La Palma, as well as the Teide on Tenerife with watches us from its 3718m (the highest mouintain in Spain). We leave
San Sebastian for an anchorage South from there, near steep
clifs. The water is really clear and warm for swimming. |
